The Course Of Action

The hate Nestlé received was unavoidable. After countless unethical decisions made by the company they were bound to hear a few complaints. Nestlé accepted their actions and took in feedback from the public for the most part. They responded by creating plans to improve what ethical issues were going on throughout the company. Although some problems were genuinely just avoided and the company didn't insure a plan to fix those issues. These issues start from within the company, not the world around them. Their ways of business are not good for the environment, children's health, and diversity. For this company to attempt a comeback, they need a serious cleansing of all of their bad business including forceful and false advertising.

After an analysis of this company from the inside out, they operate on a pre-conventional moral development level, which correlates to the teleological framework. All the company cares about is profit and is very self interest orientated. After their first scandal in the 1970s for forceful advertising stating their formula is better than breastfeeding, lead to many infant deaths. The forceful advertising led African American mothers to purchase their formula instead which boosted their sales a lot. This is not the first time they have done this either; the company takes lots of water from locations with droughts. They failed to asses these first scandals so long ago and now they are coming back to haunt them some more.

Here is a side-by-side comparison of the same product. Nestlé has failed to change and stop their forceful marketing.

For Nestlé to make an improvement, they need to completely redesign their products, campaigns, marketing language, and anyone working there who has probable cause of these unethical decisions. They need to find newer young generation hires with a degree to do their marketing and make big decisions. With the upcoming of inclusion and diversity being so important it would be great to incorporate a younger staff. Nestlé needs to stop taking water from droughtful areas. If there unsure if areas are in drought or not, they need to be asking the community. A virtue ethics approach is what this company needs. Virtue ethics consist of long-term character development, in this scenario company development. Some other suggestions could be going to interviews and actually answering questions; this company is prone to hiding and not speaking up. They issue plans and display them on their website but forget the public needs actual proof the plans are working. A similar approach could be a dentological framework that focuses on duty and morality is the action itself. This could also be a good alternative because morality is already a good step in the right direction for this company. To prioritize duties, they could focus on addressing these problems one by one, starting with the 1970s case, even though they were a while ago. All in all, I believe the teleological framework approach will be the best fit for this company. It will rebuild the company as a whole and hopefully regain the trust of the public.

  1. I agree with you. They need to change marketing strategies to really push ethical change in their company. Well written.
